To help you get started the YMCA of Greater Whittier offers beginner land aerobic classes, water classes and healthy lifestyle training.
SilverSneakers® - YogaStretch
You will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity.
SilverSneakers® – Cardio Circuit
Combine fun and fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. Upper-body strength work using hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball is alternated with non-impact aerobic choreography. A chair is offered for support, head-to-toe stretching, and complete relaxation in a comfortable position.
SilverSneakers® – Muscular Strength & Range of Movement
Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement, and activity for daily living skills. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball are offered for resistance, and a chair is used for seated and/or standing support.

Specialty Aquatic Classes
Here at the YMCA of Greater Whittier, we offer a variety of water-based classes that benefit the whole body—as well as the whole person! Water aerobics, pool running, or regular swimming workouts can all give you a great exercise session without the cumbersome constraints of gravity. Water exercise strengthens the heart, lungs, and muscles; builds physical endurance; alleviates strain on joints; and is an ideal means of relaxation. Moreover, our water classes are great social outlets. Meet staff and fellow members who will provide you with encouragement and fitness support!

Aquanetics
This class is an exercise program with light cardiovascular and stretching exercises. It is primarily designed to strengthen and tone muscles.

Aqua Aerobics

Deep Water Open Exercise Time
This class is a vigorous open-water exercise time during which you can tone and strengthen muscles and improve your overall cardiovascular health. As the name suggests, this class is for those with prior deep water experience only!

Aqua Zumba
This class is known as the Zumba "pool party". Aqua Zumba gives a new meaning to the idea of an invigorating workout. Integrating the Zumba formula and philosophy with traditional aqua fitness disciplines, Aqua Zumba blends it all together in a safe, challenging, water-based workout that's cardio conditioning, body-toning, and most of all, exhilarating beyond belief.

Backs in Motion
This class is designed for people with back pain and is ideal for those recovering back surgery. In this class, you will learn exercises aimed to strengthen muscles of the back, abdomen, and legs.

S.A.I.F. (Seniors Against Investment Fraud)
The Seniors Against Investment Fraud (SAIF) Program is an innovative educational outreach campaign funded by the Governor's Office Criminal Justice Planning and led by the California Department of Corporations. The primary purpose of SAIF is to alert and educate Californians over the age of 50 about investment and telemarketing fraud crimes and how to avoid being victimized by scam artists. RSVP (Retired & Senior Volunteer Program)
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) matches individuals age 55 and older with service opportunities at a variety of locations in the Greater Whittier and surrounding areas. RSVP "work stations" include senior centers, nutrition programs, police, sheriff and fire stations, assisted living facilities and more. Travel Club
The Uptown Whittier YMCA Travel Club meets at the Y at 10 am on the third Monday of each month (second Monday in December). There is always an interesting program, the latest update on trips and the opportunity of meeting new friends. So come join us, everyone is welcomed! Bus leaves from the Uptown YMCA on all trips.
U.S.S. IOWA TOUR (47 maximum)

Experience the American Spirit of the Battleship IOWA Educational Museum and Attraction - the West Coast’s only Battleship open to the public. Your tour will take you on a journey through World War II, the Korean War, and the Cold War to experience the life of a sailor on the lead ship of the last class of gunships. Walk the wooden decks, see artillery guns, missile decks, bridge, and mess areas. Known as “The Battleship of Presidents”, IOWA has hosted three Presidents – Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush. Before the tour, board the bus for a scrumptious lunch at Neil’s Pasta and Seafood Grill. (see list of entrées). Tour has a considerable amount of walking and stair climbing.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN: Railsplitter to Rushmore an exciting new exhibit at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. Embark on a guided tour where you will encounter unique artifacts of Lincoln’s life including a signed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation; Lincoln’s stovepipe hat; the President’s pocket watch; doctor’s autopsy report from Lincoln’s assassination; a signed copy of the 13th Amendment; Mary Todd Lincoln’s Bible, jewelry and china and dozens of other items that address the history of our 16th president. Be sure to have a hearty appetite! A delicious lunch awaits our group before the exhibit at The Elephant Bar (see list of entrées).
